SUPER LEAGUE WINTER
SEASON CHECKER
SEASON 2018-2019 - THE GLADIATORS
Players | Martin Faulkner, Daniel Gliddon (Capt), Steve Levey, Isabelle Pond, Cheuk Nam Wong. |
Position | 1 of 8 |
Comments | Having lost their title last year, they won it back with 4 wins from 5; their only dropped point coming in a 2-2 draw against now deposed champions, 5 Seeted Magguts in the 2nd round. |
SEASON 2017-2018 - THE GLADIATORS
Players | Nivjesh Aravinthan, Martin Faulkner, Daniel Gliddon (Capt), Steve Levey, Cheuk Nam Wong. |
Position | 4 of 8 |
Comments | It was a disappointing season for the reigning champions, with only 1 in in the whole season. After an opening round defeat, they did manage to remain undefeated for the rest of the season, but with their only win coming in round 4, they had little chance of retaining their title and only just edged into the top half of the table. |
SEASON 2016-2017 - THE GLADIATORS
Players | Kevin Bailey, Paul Braithwaite, Martin Faulkner, Daniel Gliddon (Capt), Aditya Verma, Cheuk Nam Wong. |
Position | 1 of 1 |
Comments | They did their business by winning the first 4 rounds, so defeat in the final round did not prevent them from retaining the title. They will certainly look at round 3 as the clincher, when they beat their closest rivals, despite not having their top 2 players. |
SEASON 2015-2016 - THE GLADIATORS
Players | Jack Chaudhury, Martin Faulkner, Daniel Gliddon (Capt), Victor Odunaiya, Daniel Young. |
Position | 1st of 10 |
Comments | Clear winners this season they had effectively sealed the title having won their first 4 games. The inevitable win in the final round completed the maximum score, although they were matches on board score by one of the other teams. |
SEASON 2014-2015 - THE GLADIATORS
Players | Victor Odunaiya, James Schenck, Hajane Anbukumar, Victoria Sit, Daniel Gliddon (Capt). |
Position | 3 out of 8 |
Comments | They started the season steadily with 2 draws and a win, but then suffered a shock defeat in round 4, which left them off the pace, so even a maximum win in the final round couldn't take them higher than 3rd. |
SEASON 2013-2014 - THE GLADIATORS
Players | Paul Jackson, Hajane Anbukumar, Prashast Vir, Victoria Sit, Daniel Gliddon (Capt). |
Position | 1 out of 8 |
Comments | Champions again after an unbeaten season. They lead all the way from round 2, although they would have been overtaken had they lost to Barcelona in the penultimate round they would have conceded the lead, but tehy drew and held firm in the final round to win the title for the 2nd time in 3 seasons. |
SEASON 2012-2013 - THE GLADIATORS
Players | Paul Jackson, Prashast Vir, Howard Curtis, Daniel Gliddon (Capt), Hajane Anbukumar , Victoria Sit. |
Position | 3 out of 6 |
Comments | 2 draws in the first 2 rounds left them running behind the eventual champions. In the end they had to settle for a 3rd place finish in a season where they had hoped to defend their title. |
SEASON 2011-2012 - THE GLADIATORS
Players | Hajane Anbukumar , David Bryant, Howard Curtis, Daniel Gliddon (Capt), Paul Jackson, Shyam Kalairajah. |
Position | 1 out of 6 |
Comments | 3 wins and 2 draws was enough to take the title although they ran it tight on the grades with just 24 points left at the end. A strong, squad, they were expected to do well; their draws came in the 2nd and final rounds. |
SEASON 2010-2011 - THE GLADIATORS
Players | Howard Curtis, Sam Fry, Daniel Gliddon (Capt), Paul Jackson, Shyam Kalairajah. |
Position | 2 out of 6 |
Comments | Having won the league 2 seasons ago and then finished bottom last year, it was anyone's guess what would happen this season. Wins in the first 3 rounds had them neck and neck with the holders, but a draw against Real Betis in roun d4 left them needing to beat 5 Seeted Magguts in the final round to win the league, but they lost and finished runners-up. |
SEASON 2009-2010 - THE GLADIATORS
Players | Bobby Aspinall, Elliott Burton, Howard Curtis, Sam Fry, Daniel Gliddon (Capt), Paul Jackson. |
Position | 6 out of 6 |
Comments | Having won the title last season, this season turned into a complete disaster as the team finished bottom despite there being very little change in personal. In the end, they failed to win a single game and drew only 2. |
SEASON 2008-2009 - THE GLADIATORS
Players | Bobby Aspinall, Howard Curtis, Sam Fry, Daniel Gliddon (Capt), Paul Jackson. |
Position | 1 out of 6 |
Comments | The title was won with only one match not won. That came in the 3rd round when they were held by the Champions' of the previous season, Real Betis. They went into the last round clear of Real but held their nerve to win, albeit helped by the fact Real Betis had a bad night in their final match. |
SEASON 2007-2008 - THE GLADIATORS
Players | Bobby Aspinall, Howard Curtis, Sam Fry, Daniel Gliddon (Capt), Paul Jackson. |
Position | 2 out of 6 |
Comments | Despite being unbeaten, The Gladiators only managed 2nd place, having drawn 1 more match than title winners Real Betis, with whom they drew in the middle round. |
SEASON 2006-2007 - THE GLADIATORS
Players | Chris Chapman, Howard Curtis, Daniel Gliddon (Capt), Paul Jackson, Bill McDonald. |
Position | 2 out of 4 |
Comments | This was so near and yet so far. They would certain have won the title but for defeat to the current holders in round 3. In round 5, they had to win the head to head match against The Others but were held to a draw and had to make do with 2nd place for the 2nd season in a row. |
SEASON 2005-2006 - THE GLADIATORS
Players | Howard Curtis (Capt), Daniel Gliddon, Paul Jackson, Bill McDonald, John Sheekey. |
Position | 2 out of 4 |
Comments | The team finished a distant 2nd having clawed back after defeats in rounds 2 and 3. They edged back into 2nd after the final game of the season. |
