MULTI 2 DIAMONDS

One of three types of hands :

1                    weak 2 in a major, 6-10 points and a 6 card suit

2                    strong 2 in a minor, 8 playing tricks

3                    balanced 21-22

This leaves strong twos in a major as forcing or not by agreement, and a balanced 19-20 points to be opened as 2NT (as it is more pre-emptive than 2D).

Partner responds to 2 diamonds :

2H - a weak relay (as 2D is forcing) to establish opener's true hand

2S - medium strength, required to play in 2S if that is partner's hand,

or wanting to play in 4H if partner has a maximum weak 2H (if partner has a minimum weak 2H they will bid 3H to play).

2NT - 14+ points looking for game somewhere.

Opener responds to 2H -

Pass - I have a weak 2 in hearts

2S - I have a weak 2 in spades

2NT - I have 21-22 balanced - responder then can use Stayman, transfers etc.

3C,3D - I have 8 playing tricks in this suit

Opener responds to 2S -

Pass - I have a weak 2 in spades

2NT - I have 21-22 balanced - responder then can use Stayman, transfers etc.

3C,3D - I have 8 playing tricks in this suit

3H - I have a minimum weak 2 in hearts

4H - I have a maximum weak 2 in hearts

Opener responds to 2NT -

3C - I have either 8 p/tricks in Clubs or a max. weak 2 in hearts

3D - I have either 8 p/tricks in Diamonds or a max. weak 2 in spades

3H - I have a minimum weak 2 in hearts

3S - I have a minimum weak 2 in spades

to the 3C or 3D bids, responder relays the next suit up, e.g. 3C-3D, opener bids the major with a weak 2 in that suit or bids 3NT to show the strong minor hand.

If the opponents bid over the 2D opener, responder should pass with a weak hand and await developments.
